KDDI and Samsung Successfully Complete 5G Multi-Device Trial at a Professional Baseball Stadium in Okinawa, Japan

Sports users’ experience is taken to new heights as the two companies use Samsung’s end-to-end 5G solutions

Trial includes prototype 5G tablets used in 5G hot zone in a way that redefines entertainment in sports venues, live concerts and exhibitions



KDDI and Samsung Electronics today announced the successful completion of a 5G field trial held in Okinawa Cellular Stadium, a 30,000-person capacity baseball stadium in Japan.

Using Samsung’s 5G end-to-end solutions spanning virtualized core, virtualized RAN, one of the smallest 5G access units, and multiple prototype 5G tablet devices, the trial showcased a live feed of 4K video contents downloaded and streamed simultaneously on 5G tablets supporting the millimeter wave spectrum. This is the first time to test 5G performance using 5G tablets in Japan.

Samsung’s 5G access units with beam-forming technology were installed on a light tower located outside the left field fence to create 5G coverage in the direction of home plate and first and third bases. As a result, the tablets placed on seats in this coverage area were able to have 4K videos downloaded and streamed on them via 5G.

The successful trial results reflect the two companies’ efforts in using 5G technology and ultra-high frequency spectrum (28GHz band in this instance), to redefine user experiences in crowded environments and spotlight a new approach to viewing sports games.

The outcome of this 5G stadium trial connotes advanced connectivity, not only at sports events, but also in a wide variety of crowded entertainment spots, including live music concerts, exhibitions, and international conferences, leading to new viewing experiences. By demonstrating how users will be able to simultaneously access 5G networks and enjoy immersive experiences regardless of their location, today’s accomplishment continues 5G momentum as it enters commercialization stage.

Since 2015, KDDI and Samsung have been working closely to demonstrate the performance of 5G in various real-life scenarios. This includes a multi-cell handover demonstration that took place in February 2017 where the device was mounted on a car that traveled the busy streets of Tokyo (Link), high-speed mobility test with the device attached on a car racing over 200km/hour (124 miles/hour) in Yongin, ‘Everland SPEEDWAY’ in Korea in September 2017 (Link) and the recent successful uplink/downlink handover test that took place on a high-speed train railway in Japan (Link). Samsung’s state-of-the-art technologies including the first commercial ASIC-based 5G modems and mmWave RFICs for compact access units, CPEs and tablets using in-house technology and assets laid down the framework for these demonstrations.

The HUAWEI P20 Series reflects the art of light, with camera features that enhance the smartphone photography experience. The HUAWEI P20 Pro features a Leica triple camera with the highest total pixel count on a smartphone available in the market - the camera configuration is comprised of a 40 MP RGB sensor, a 20 MP monochrome sensor and an 8 MP sensor with telephoto lens. It also features a color temperature sensor for better color reproduction. With f/1.8, f/1.6 and f/2.4 wide aperture to capture crisp, clear details, the HUAWEI P20 Pro also includes a brand new Leica 3x telephoto (VARIO-SUMMILUX-H 1:1.6 - 2.4/27-80ASPH) lens for long-range photography of up to 5x Hybrid Zoom. The HUAWEI P20 builds on its predecessor's foundation with a Leica dual camera featuring a 12 MP lens with a pixel size as high as 1.55 μm, and a 20 MP monochrome lens, enhancing the HUAWEI P20's ability to capture photos in low-light settings.

The HUAWEI P20 Series devices support six-axis stabilization and 960fps super slow motion, which is 4x higher than the standard 240 fps and captures details that cannot be seen with the naked eye. With Ultra Snapshot mode, the devices can capture an image in as little as 0.3 seconds by just double clicking the down volume button, even from an off screen.

Master AI Photography Experience for Everyone, Everywhere
With the Kirin 970 processor, the HUAWEI P20 Series automatically identifies more than 500 scenarios in 19 categories and selects photography modes and camera settings to deliver incredible, professional-looking images - even for novice photographers. In addition, HUAWEI AIS steadies handheld night shots for incredible long exposure images without a tripod. Brand new to HUAWEI's advanced camera system is 4D predictive focus. In this mode, the camera predicts moving objects and focuses on them with extreme efficiency to capture minute details of objects in motion. In addition, the HUAWEI P20 Series features AI-Assisted Composition, providing intelligent suggestions to frame group shots and landscapes.

Additionally, the HUAWEI HiAI Ecosystem enhances a variety of app experiences. For instance, the HUAWEI P20 Series includes on-device Prisma processing, which supports real-time filter recommendations based on scene and object recognition - the calculation speed is three to four times that of the cloud version.

In partnership with Google, the HUAWEI P20 Series supports Google ARCore delivering advanced AR capabilities.

Collaboration with Porsche Design Delivers a New Level of Luxury and Technology
The PORSCHE DESIGN HUAWEI Mate RS combines Porsche Design's signature brand aesthetic with HUAWEI's mobile engineering expertise setting a new standard in luxury smartphones. The PORSCHE DESIGN HUAWEI Mate RS features a Leica triple camera with the highest total pixel count on a smartphone available in the market - the camera configuration is comprised of a 40 MP RGB sensor, a 20 MP monochrome sensor and an 8 MP sensor with telephoto lens.
